Ken’s Krew gears up for upcoming fashion show fundraiser

On Sept. 12 Ken’s Krew held a kickoff breakfast at Wegman’s in King of Prussia. Ken’s Krew is an organization that enables and trains individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to successfully enter the workforce. Since 1997 nearly 300 individuals have been trained and placed in jobs. The breakfast took place so parents and employer representatives could discuss the event details of their upcoming fashion show to be held on Oct. 21 as well view a movie on the Ken’s Krew Inc. Ken’s Krew will host “Stepping Out,” an event that features affordable fall fashions from Boscov’s in Plymouth Meeting, offer raffle prizes and feature a special appearance by CBS3’s Nicole Brewer as Mistress of Ceremonies. With the help of employment partners like Home Depot, VS, Outback, Wegmans and Fairway Food Markets, Ken’s Krew is able to provide jobs in turn and add meaning and purpose to the lives of these individuals.

Parents of developmentally or intellectually disabled teens and young adults face unique challenges, particularly when it comes to such rites of passage as obtaining a driver’s license and getting a job — two major steps toward independent living. And even when transportation is available, the jobs aren’t. But with the help of Ken’s Krew, Inc., and its corporate partners — Home Depot, CVS Caremark, Outback Steakhouse, Wegmans, and Fairway Market — a growing number of young men and women are finding meaningful employment. This isn’t just a pat on the back and  a menial task; these men and women go through a comprehensive assessment and must meet specific qualifications to be eligible for employment. By requiring them to be responsible for transportation and uphold job performance, they are getting something they all want: to be treated “normally.” On October 21 you can show your support by attending Stepping Out with Ken’s Krew, a fashion-forward fundraiser showcasing Ken’s Krew “kids” modeling the latest looks from Boscov’s Plymouth Meeting store. Learn more about this hardworking organization by meeting Sharon O’Brien, a KKI board member and the event’s chair.
